Microsoft announced on December 6 that starting March 1, 2025, Microsoft 365 applications will no longer support the insertion of Filmbox (.FBX) and SketchUp (.SKP) file formats.
Microsoft said that after March next year, documents inserted into the above two file formats will not be affected, but direct insertion of 3D models in these two formats will no longer be supported. Microsoft recommends users use or convert to formats such as OBJ, STL, GLTF, and GLB.
A press release by Microsoft stated that the reason for stopping the direct insertion was because the dependencies required to insert FBX and SKP files used third-party transcoding packages that were no longer maintained, and continued use would pose a security risk.
The change will take effect automatically and does not require any action from the administrator.
However, Microsoft recommends that administrators notify users and update relevant documents to inform users of how to handle files in the future.
