The Nasarawa State Police Command has cautioned organisers and participants against proceeding with a planned protest in Lafia, the state capital, scheduled for Monday, August 17, 2026.
The command said the protest was being organised by a group identified as Concern Women in Politics, Lafia Local Government, which reportedly mobilised about 10,000 women over the alleged arrest and detention of suspected supporters of retired Inspector-General of Police Mohammed Abubakar-Adamu.
In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, the command acknowledged citizens’ right to express grievances but urged the organisers to pursue lawful alternatives.
The Commissioner of Police, Shetima Mohammed, cited concerns over the security situation in Lafia and advised the organisers to engage relevant authorities through dialogue.
The police warned that a large street gathering could be hijacked by criminal elements, disrupt economic activities and threaten public safety.
Mohammed said the command remained committed to protecting citizens’ rights while maintaining peace and public order.
He warned that anyone found engaging in violence, property destruction, obstruction of lawful activities or other acts capable of breaching public peace would face arrest and prosecution.
The police commissioner urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding and appealed to the organisers and intended participants to avoid actions that could undermine the peace in the state.
