The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has thrown its weight behind the Minister of Power, Chief Joseph Tegbe’s call for greater collaboration among stakeholders in the Nigerian Electricity Market (NEM) to improve electricity supply across the country.
The endorsement came during a workshop convened by the Minister in Abuja recently with the theme: “Legal, Policy and Regulatory Harmonisation between Federal and State Institutions on the Decentralisation of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).”
Tegbe was quoted to have
stressed the need to harmonise regulatory and operational activities across the electricity sector.
He said such collaboration is essential to expanding access to reliable electricity for Nigerians.
The minister noted that electricity remains the foundation for national economic growth and development, adding that all players in the sector must work together to achieve the common objective of improving power supply.
But a statement issued by NERC on Sunday in Abuja, quoted its Chairman, Dr. Musiliu Oseni, echoing the minister’s position, and urged federal and state institutions to deepen cooperation as Nigeria transitions to a decentralised electricity market.
According to him, Nigerians are not interested in which level of government regulates the sector but are concerned about having stable and reliable electricity.
“Nigerians do not really care about who regulates what or who is responsible for policymaking, but they strongly care about the availability and reliability of supply,” Oseni said.
He added that consumers judge the sector by the quality of electricity they receive rather than the institutions responsible for delivering it.
Oseni called on regulators, policymakers and other stakeholders to put aside personal interests and institutional rivalries in favour of collaboration that would improve service delivery.
He also advocated the establishment of a structured platform for regular dialogue between federal and state authorities to strengthen policy coordination in the evolving electricity market.
The NERC chairman suggested that the National Council on Power (NACOP) be restructured to facilitate more frequent and focused engagements between the Federal Ministry of Power and state commissioners responsible for energy.
According to him, regular policy meetings would improve coordination, support effective implementation of reforms and help address emerging challenges during the ongoing decentralisation of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry.
