The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has rejected reports that it joined calls for FIFA President Gianni Infantino to step down, describing the claims circulating on social media as false.
The federation clarified its position in a statement posted on its official X account on Saturday, insisting that it has neither called for Infantino’s resignation nor supported any campaign seeking his removal.
“Contrary to reports, especially on social media, @thenff has never asked and is not asking for @FIFAcom President, Mr. Gianni Infantino to step down as FIFA PRESIDENT,” the NFF stated.
“This is outright falsehood. Kindly disregard,” it added.
The clarification comes amid growing criticism of Infantino from some European football associations following his controversial FIFA forward enterprise proposal, which sought external investment in FIFA competitions to increase financial inflows.
Although the proposal was subsequently withdrawn, football associations in Wales, England and Norway have called for Infantino to leave office.
The reports had claimed that the NFF aligned with the European federations in opposing the FIFA president. However, the Nigerian federation said the claim was untrue.
The NFF has previously expressed support for Infantino’s leadership. In February, NFF President Ibrahim Gusau praised what he described as the FIFA president’s “decade of transformative leadership.”
The federation has also submitted a letter nominating and supporting Infantino for re-election as FIFA president in 2027.
