The Nigerien authorities on Saturday launched the National Refoundation Conference in Niamey, presided over by General Abdourahamane Tiani.

These consultations, formalised by Decree 2025-086 of 8 February 2025, are structured around five key areas – Peace and security, Political and institutional refoundation, Economy and sustainable development, Geopolitics and international relations, Justice and human rights.

In his speech, General Tiani outlined the four main objectives of the gathering, including defining the fundamental principles of the transition and its duration. He also emphasised the need to prioritise national interests and uphold the values that should guide the rebuilding of the Republic.

In his opening remarks, Minister of the Interior Mohamed Toumba stressed the importance of protecting the country’s natural resources, citing uranium, oil, diamonds, fresh water, and lithium.

He accused certain foreign powers of having planned the invasion of the country under the guise of ECOWAS to preserve their hold on these resources.

These meetings, whose preparatory phase began on 31 December 2023 in Agadez, follow regional consultations that, according to Minister Toumba, demonstrated the people’s determination to defend their sovereignty under the leadership of the CNSP.
