Nigeria and Niger Take Steps Toward Renewing Diplomatic and Security Ties

Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Maitama Tuggar is scheduled to visit Niamey on Wednesday, April 16, marking a new phase in diplomatic efforts to restore cooperation between the two countries.

This upcoming visit builds on earlier engagements, including a March meeting between Niger’s Foreign Minister Bakary Yaou Sangaré and Nigeria’s ambassador to Niamey, Mohammed Sani Usman.

During that session, both sides initiated discussions focused on regional security and border issues, particularly around counter-terrorism and the fight against organized crime.

One point of contention has been Nigeria’s introduction of new border control measures, which Niger viewed as overly restrictive for communities living along the frontier. However, both countries acknowledged the need for technical dialogue and agreed to continue engaging in order to find workable solutions.

After months of strained relations following the 2023 military takeover in Niger, the upcoming dialogue signals the beginning of stronger diplomatic ties between Nigeria and Niger.
