As Nigeria celebrates her 64th independence, Cross River State Governor, Sen. Bassey Otu, has called for reflection and unity.
In an address to the people of the state on October 1, to commemorate Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary, Otu urged the people to consider the unity of the nation first as he appealed for a reflection on the sacrifices made by founding fathers.
“Our independence was not mere happenstance; it was won through the blood and sweat of patriots who believed in a united Nigeria,” he said and called on citizens to embrace unity and work together towards national development.
“This year also marks the 110th anniversary of Nigeria’s formation, following the historic amalgamation of the Northern and Southern Protectorates on 1st January, we celebrate not only 64 years of independence but also a century of our existence as a nation,” Otu expressed.
Maintaining that while celebrations are crucial, they should not overshadow the deeper meaning of independence for the nation and its citizens.
“Let us remember that the true essence of independence is not just in the absence of colonial rule but in our ability to self-govern, uplift our communities, and foster an environment of peace and progress,” he added.
Otu stressed the need for collective efforts in addressing the myriad of challenges facing Nigeria, pointing out that independence should not be seen purely as a celebration but as a charge to foster national growth and stability.
“As we commemorate this day, let us renew our commitment to nation-building, ensuring that our children inherit a society characterized by peace, equality, and progress,” Otu stated passionately.
While counting his giant strides since becoming Governor of the State, Otu has reassured the people that his government will continued to do more to actualize his people first mantra.
He concluded his address, affirming the potential of Nigeria as a nation united in diversity, saying, “We have all it takes to rise above our challenges as long as we remain resolute, united, and focused on our common goals”.
