President Bola Tinubu has said Nigeria’s admission as the newest National Member Committee of the World Energy Council (WEC) marks a significant milestone that will enable the country to play a greater role in shaping global energy policies while advancing Africa’s interests on the international stage.
The President said Nigeria’s entry into the century-old global organisation of more than 100 member countries strengthens its position in international discussions on energy security, equity and sustainability, reflecting growing confidence in the country’s ongoing energy reforms.
According to him, the development gives Nigeria a strategic platform to contribute to global policy conversations and champion Africa’s priorities in the evolving global energy landscape.
“Nigeria has joined the World Energy Council to lead, not just participate – to ensure Africa’s voice shapes global energy decisions,” Tinubu said.
In a statement issued on Friday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President described Nigeria’s admission into the World Energy Council as “a proud moment for the nation” and a strong endorsement of the country’s leadership role in Africa’s energy sector.
Tinubu also congratulated the inaugural leadership of WEC Nigeria, with Abdulrazaq Isa as Chairman and Bala Wunti as Chief Executive Officer, alongside members of the pioneer Board drawn from the energy industry, regulatory institutions, finance, academia, industry associations and the Future Energy Leaders community.
The President described Isa as “a distinguished patriot and trailblazing industrialist” whose investments in indigenous refining and industrial energy have expanded opportunities for Nigerian enterprise.
He also praised Wunti as “one of Nigeria’s finest energy strategists and reform champions,” noting that his more than three decades of service had been defined by integrity, strategic vision and reforms that boosted national revenues while restoring investor confidence in the energy sector.
Tinubu expressed confidence in the composition of the inaugural Board, saying its mix of experienced industry leaders, regulators, finance experts and young professionals provides the credibility and neutrality required to drive the council’s objectives in Nigeria.
“The blend of seasoned industry captains, regulators, finance experts and youth leaders on the Board gives WEC Nigeria the balance, neutrality and credibility required to succeed,” the President stated.
He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s full support for WEC Nigeria as a technology-neutral platform for policy dialogue, investment mobilisation and innovation, while pledging that Nigeria would work closely with the World Energy Council and its global community to promote secure, affordable and sustainable energy for all.
The World Energy Council is one of the world’s oldest and most influential energy organisations, bringing together governments, businesses, regulators and experts from over 100 countries to advance global cooperation on energy policy and sustainable development.
