Nigeria’s first indigenous female neurosurgeon, Dr Salamat Ahuoiza Aliu-Ibrahim, has been appointed Medical Director of a children’s hospital in the United States.
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) disclosed this in a statement signed by Abdur-Rahman Balogun, its Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit, on Thursday, saying its Chairman/CEO, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, congratulated Aliu-Ibrahim on the appointment.
Dabiri-Erewa described the development as another milestone for Nigerians in the diaspora and a testament to the contributions of Nigerian professionals around the world.
She said Aliu-Ibrahim’s achievement demonstrated that excellence transcends gender, race and religion, adding that her career would inspire young Nigerians, particularly girls seeking to pursue careers in medicine and other demanding professions.
According to Dabiri-Erewa, the appointment also challenges stereotypes surrounding Muslim women and demonstrates that they can excel in every sphere of life.
“Dr. Salamat Aliu-Ibrahim’s appointment is yet another reminder that Muslim women cover their hair, not their brains,” Dabiri-Erewa said.
“Her remarkable achievement demonstrates that faith and excellence are not mutually exclusive. She has become a beacon of hope and inspiration for countless young girls across Nigeria and beyond.”
The NiDCOM boss urged Muslim women and young Nigerians to remain committed to excellence, saying competence, integrity and hard work would distinguish those determined to make meaningful contributions to society.
However, while celebrating Aliu-Ibrahim’s appointment, Dabiri-Erewa expressed concern over the continued migration of highly skilled Nigerian healthcare professionals to foreign countries in search of better opportunities.
She said Nigerians in the diaspora had continued to distinguish themselves globally and contribute significantly to humanity but acknowledged the challenges posed by the persistent loss of skilled professionals from Nigeria’s healthcare sector.
Dabiri-Erewa said efforts were being made to address the challenges confronting the sector through improved welfare, remuneration and working conditions for medical professionals.
She said creating an enabling environment for healthcare workers would help curb brain drain and strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system for sustainable national development.
The NiDCOM chairman commended Aliu-Ibrahim for representing Nigeria through excellence, dedication and professionalism and wished her success in her new role.
She also reiterated the commission’s commitment to celebrating outstanding Nigerians in the diaspora whose achievements, she said, continue to improve the country’s image and inspire future generations.
