Norfolk to Name its New Virginia-Class Submarine

Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro announced that a Virginia-class submarine will be named for the city of Norfolk.

The submarine will follow in the footsteps of three former vessels named for the mermaid city. One was a brigantine ship used in the late 1700s, another was a destroyer leader used during the 50s and 60s, and the third was a Los Angeles-class nuclear attack submarine used for about 30 years until 2015.

“Today’s submarine force is the most capable force in the world and in the history of U.S. Navy,” Del Toro said in a statement. “It is my honor and privilege to announce the names of the future submarines which will protect us from deep below the ocean’s waves.”

According to the Navy, the new attack submarine was designed to seek and destroy enemy submarines and surface ships, conduct intelligence and surveillance tasks, engage in mine warfare and other battle operations.

In its announcement of the naming, the Navy noted Norfolk’s long history of shipbuilding, marine operations and military installations. Norfolk and the rest of Hampton Roads host more than 82,000 active-duty military personnel and multiple installations. Naval Station Norfolk is also the largest naval station in the world.

Ann Holton, wife of Sen. Tim Kaine, will sponsor the new USS Norfolk. Two other submarines will receive names from Del Toro. The USS Norfolk will be joined by the future USS Potomac and USS Brooklyn.
