As preparations intensify for the rescheduled Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council elections slated for August 2, 2025, frontline chairmanship contender, Comrade Nsibiet John, has reiterated his commitment to repositioning the union by making the welfare of journalists a top priority.

Comrade John who is the Publisher of The Ink Newspaper, made this known during a strategic engagement visit at weekend to the leadership of the Amalgamated Newspaper Publishers Association (ANPA), where he formally presented his manifesto and introduced members of his campaign team vying for various offices in the forthcoming election.

Addressing the gathering, Comrade John emphasized the urgent need to reposition the NUJ as a proactive and responsive union that truly caters to the needs of its members.

He said that if elected, his administration will focus on improving the socio-economic well-being of journalists, strengthening institutional integrity, and creating opportunities for career advancement.

“Journalists are at the heart of societal development, yet many work under very harsh conditions without basic tools, insurance, or consistent training,” he noted. “My administration will change this narrative. We will initiate partnerships that will ensure regular capacity-building workshops, provide modern working tools, and pursue health insurance schemes for practicing journalists.”

Comrade John, a seasoned journalist and publisher with a reputation for integrity, added that his vision for the NUJ is anchored on professionalism, unity, and empowerment. He disclosed plans to collaborate with reputable media development organizations, private sector stakeholders, and government institutions to promote ethical journalism and create platforms for young reporters to thrive.

He also promised to ensure that welfare packages, including financial assistance, housing initiatives, and workplace safety measures, are explored and implemented through sustainable structures.

While acknowledging the challenges facing the union, including dwindling trust in its leadership and a disconnect between members and the executive, Comrade John stated that he is bringing a new wave of leadership that will bridge the gap, restore confidence, and make the NUJ more inclusive.

“My team is not just contesting to occupy offices. We are contesting to serve, to bring new ideas, to be accountable, and to run a transparent union. We want to restore pride in the NUJ, and we believe that with the support of our colleagues and elders, this can be achieved,” he added.

The ANPA leadership, in response, commended Comrade John for his bold vision and maturity in engaging with stakeholders across board. They described his visit as a sign of humility and strategic thinking, qualities they said are essential for union leadership.

Several members of ANPA also used the opportunity to express concerns over issues affecting media practitioners in the state, including poor remuneration, non-payment of stipends during assignments, and lack of legal protection when facing threats. Comrade John assured that these issues would be tackled through constructive dialogue and policy reforms.

As the election date draws near, Comrade John continues to receive widespread support from various media blocs and industry players who believe his candidacy represents a break from the past and a future of renewed hope for journalists in Akwa Ibom State.
