For thousands of young Nigerians currently undergoing their mandatory National Youth Service, brighter days may be ahead.
The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), YD Ahmed, on Friday, announced that corps members will soon start receiving an increased monthly allowance of N77,000—more than double the current N33,000 stipend.
Ahmed made this revelation while addressing the 2024 Batch ‘C’ Stream II corps members at the Katsina State orientation camp, confirming that the increment had been factored into the 2025 national budget and would take effect once the budget is passed.
For many corps members, the current allowance barely covers basic living expenses. The prospect of earning N77,000 per month signals a significant shift, promising financial relief for thousands navigating the realities of post-university life.
Ahmed assured the corps members that the federal government remains committed to their welfare and security, urging them to reciprocate this gesture by serving diligently. He also dismissed rumors and misinformation, stating unequivocally that the increase has been approved, and all that remains is for the budget to be passed.
“Let me quickly inform you that the federal government has already approved the increment of our allowance. It is no longer news. We have the approval in our hands. All we are waiting for is just the passage of the budget,” Ahmed stated. “Hopefully, by next month, instead of N33,000, you will start receiving N77,000.”
Beyond financial matters, Ahmed also addressed safety concerns, assuring corps members that they would not be posted to areas with security threats. He urged them to be respectful of the cultures and traditions of their host communities, emphasizing that integration and understanding were key aspects of the NYSC experience.
In his remarks, Ibrahim Saidu, the NYSC Katsina State Coordinator, disclosed that the camp currently hosts 1,414 corps members, comprising 875 males and 539 females.
While the announcement has sparked excitement and optimism, some corps members remain cautious, given past delays in implementing financial promises.
However, if the budget is passed as expected, this increase could redefine the NYSC experience, offering young graduates greater financial stability and the ability to contribute more meaningfully during their service year.
