Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (ADC), Peter Obi, has denied a report claiming he told Nigerian soldiers to reject any salary increment until after the general elections, describing the claim as entirely false.
Obi, in a statement issued on Tuesday, said he was reacting to a report that falsely attributed the comment to him. “This assertion is entirely untrue,” he said.
He said his respect for the Armed Forces, particularly personnel of the Nigerian Army who serve under difficult and dangerous conditions, remains unwavering, adding that he has “consistently advocated for the adequate provision of equipment, motivation, and protection for our security personnel.”
The former Anambra State governor recalled his concern when soldiers were killed by insurgents following a delayed rescue effort, saying it prompted him to question “how those defending us could be left vulnerable in their time of need.”
Obi promised that, if elected president, the welfare, resources, safety and honour of soldiers would be treated as a top priority. “Those who ensure Nigeria’s security must never be relegated to a secondary concern,” he said.
He said soldiers deserve “utmost respect, unwavering support, and a government that will unequivocally stand by them,” adding that his administration would work to end situations where servicemen and women are left unprotected in the face of danger.
The ADC candidate urged Nigerians to disregard the report, saying he remains committed to “a clear and consistent vision for a secure and prosperous Nigeria.”
