Stakeholders across the four political blocs in Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State have endorsed the member representing Calabar Municipality/Odukpani Federal Constituency, Rep. Bassey Akiba, for a second term ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The endorsement was declared during separate meetings and rallies held in the Eburutu, Iboku, Okoyong and Omo blocs, where community leaders, political stakeholders and elected councillors unanimously passed a vote of confidence on the lawmaker.
The stakeholders commended Akiba’s performance since assuming office in 2023, citing his contributions in agriculture, education, healthcare, livelihood support and legislative representation. They noted that his tenure has been marked by a consistent focus on grassroots development and accessibility to constituents.
They further argued that it is the turn of Odukpani to retain the House of Representatives seat, emphasising that Calabar Municipality previously held the position for 12 consecutive years before Akiba’s emergence. According to them, denying Odukpani the opportunity to complete a second term would undermine the principle of rotational representation within the federal constituency.
The stakeholders also appealed to Governor Bassey Otu to disregard calls advocating a return of the seat to Calabar Municipality in the next election cycle, insisting that political equity and fairness demand continuity for Odukpani.
At the Okoyong bloc rally, key figures including the Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Duties, Barrister Ekpenyong Akiba, alongside councillors Hon. Effiong Ekene Effiom (Ekori Anaku Ward), Hon. Bassey Effiong Bassey (Oniman Kiong Ward), and Hon. Okon Edem Okon (Akamkpa Ward), stressed the importance of retaining the seat within Odukpani.
Similarly, speakers at the Omo bloc praised Akiba’s livelihood initiatives, describing them as impactful, particularly for youths and women. The motion endorsing his second term was moved by Hon. Effiong Adiam, councillor representing Mbiabo Obom Itiat, and seconded by Hon. Emmanuel Effiong Nsa, councillor for Odot Ward. The session was presided over by Hon. E.N. Ewa Snr, councillor for Odukpani Central Ward.
At the Eburutu bloc, proceedings were led by Councillor Godwin Ndem of Eniong Ward, while Councillor Aruk Emmanuel of Eki Ward moved the motion for endorsement, seconded by Councillor Okokon Ekpenyong of Ito/Idere/Ukwa Ward.
In the Iboku bloc, stakeholders also unanimously backed the lawmaker’s re-election bid. Notable attendees included Hon. Ene Itam Eyo (Greek Town I Ward), Hon. Emmanuel Otu Edet (Adiabo Efot Ward), and Hon. Asuquo Eniang Okon (Ikoneto Ward).
Responding to the endorsements, Akiba expressed appreciation for the confidence reposed in his leadership, stressing the importance of unity in achieving electoral success.
“No matter how much money you have, you cannot win without the support of the people,” he said.
“It is only when we work together that we will be able to move the federal constituency forward. I assure you that if given the mandate for a second term, the difference will be clear, and we shall continue to work together as a team.”
