Opposition behind high fuel, food prices – APC Chieftain

Tinubu describes kidnapped Catholic schoolgirls as ‘missing’ students

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River State has defended President Bola Tinubu over rising fuel and prices, attributing the surge to opposition and global economic factors rather than domestic policies.

Speaking at the 1.5 million mega endorsement rally held at Ikom Township Stadium on Saturday, the APC stalwart, Soni Abang, said international developments, including geopolitical tensions and fluctuations in global crude oil markets largely drove the increase in the pump price of petroleum products.

Abang, who also serves as Executive Director of the South South Development Commission (SSDC) and the Coordinator of Renewed Hope Agenda in the state, argued that it was unfair to blame the Tinubu administration for challenges that were not entirely within its control.

“Is Tinubu the one who started the crisis in Iran?” he asked. “These are global issues affecting economies around the world. Even at that, fuel prices in Nigeria remain relatively competitive.”

He maintained that the current administration inherited a fragile economy and has since embarked on reforms aimed at stabilising the country’s fiscal outlook.

According to him, the removal of fuel subsidy and other policy decisions, though difficult, were necessary steps to reposition the economy for long-term growth.

The APC chieftain further noted that the impact of rising fuel costs on food prices was gradually easing, insisting that government interventions were beginning to yield results.

“Food prices are coming down daily. The earlier spike was manipulated by opposition elements to create panic, but the situation is improving,” he said.

Abang also highlighted ongoing infrastructure projects across the country, including major road constructions, as evidence of the administration’s commitment to development.

He called on Nigerians to remain patient and support the government, expressing confidence that ongoing reforms would soon translate into tangible economic benefits.

The rally, which drew thousands of party supporters, also featured endorsements for President Tinubu and Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
