Osun Gov Adeleke threatens to depose monarchs if violence escalates

Governor Ademola Adeleke has issued a stern warning to traditional rulers in Ifon, Erin Osun, and Ilobu communities, emphasizing that any failure to sustain the current peace and de-escalation of tensions will result in decisive state action.

The governor’s warning comes amid reports of planned attacks by unidentified groups seeking to reignite conflict in the affected areas.

“In the midst of Sallah celebrations, I received reports of some people planning another round of conflict around Ifon, Ilobu, and Erin Osun towns. Security agencies have intensified surveillance to prevent any attacks,” Adeleke stated in a press release signed by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, on Monday.

He further disclosed that security operatives were expediting investigations into key figures involved in the crisis and reiterated that traditional leaders who have committed to peace agreements would be held accountable.

“The security agencies are also speeding up the interrogation of key chieftains and actors in the conflict. I remind the top leaders of these towns that the peace undertakings they have signed are not mere formalities. They will be held accountable before the law,” he added.

Governor Adeleke also justified the recent relaxation of the curfew in the affected areas, citing humanitarian concerns. However, he warned that any exploitation of this leniency to instigate further violence would result in the full reinstatement of a 24-hour curfew.

“The curfew we relaxed was on humanitarian grounds. As a compassionate government, we recognize that many innocent people are suffering due to the destructive agenda of a few elements. Any attempt to misuse this adjustment for renewed violence will lead to the full re-imposition of the 24-hour curfew,” he asserted.

In a final and decisive warning, Adeleke threatened to depose any traditional ruler under whose leadership violence resurfaces.

“Additionally, I will remove from office any traditional ruler where violence recurs. This measure is firmly on the table. Royal fathers of each town must call their subjects to order. I will wield the big stick. Enough is enough,” he concluded.
