PDP Governorship Candidate Condemns Governor Otu’s Alleged Threat on Opposition

By Frank Ulom

The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Cross River State, Sir Arthur Jarvis Archibong has condemned a remark by Governor Bassey Otu (APC), allegedly threatening to “crush opposition” politicians in the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Archibong made the condemnation in a press release on Sunday, making his displeasure known to the threat that has been widely described as a threat to opposition across the state.

The PDP Governorship described Otu’s remark as “reckless and deeply disappointing.”

He said the governor’s statement exposes a dangerous intolerance for dissenting voices and an attempt to intimidate critics.

He particularly expressed shock that the threat came from Governor Otu, who prides himself as an Apostle, accusing him of descending into “political thuggery” instead of upholding the moral standards expected of a man of faith.

Invoking the scriptures, the PDP candidate cited Proverbs 22:22-23, which states: “Do not exploit the poor because they are poor and do not crush the needy in court, for the Lord will take up their case and will exact life for life.”

Archibong asserted that opposition will not be cowed or intimidated by the governor’s threats.

“As opposition, we will not be cowed by threats, and also pledge to pursue wholesome, issue-based campaign in the best interest of the people of Cross River State,” he noted.

According to him, “The days ahead will be interesting, because of a proper x-ray of what has so far been done by this administration.”

Archibong stressed that a performing government would have nothing to fear from scrutiny, adding that this administration has itself created the “content” being used against it.

“If the administration of Governor Otu has done well, there won’t be anything for the opposition to talk about,” he said.

He said what this government should do is “crush” the people with investments, purposeful governance, and development backed by visionary leadership.

Archibong further urged the administration to “face reality,” pointing to Abia and Enugu states as shining examples where good governance speaks louder than threats.

He also called on the governor to “crush” the damaging SBM Intelligence report which has embarrassed Cross River and battered its image, rather than waste energy targeting opposition figures.

The PDP candidate reaffirmed his commitment to peaceful, issue-based campaign that is focused on the welfare of Cross River people.

He concluded that no amount of intimidation will deter the opposition from holding the government accountable.

“Our people need sustainable wealth creation and not text book MOUs.”
