The Pennsylvania House of Representatives approved a bill Wednesday that would mandate companies disclose all artificial intelligence-generated content used to sell consumer goods.
The legislation, introduced by Democratic State Rep. Chris Pielli, would require AI-generated content — including images, audio, video and text for selling consumer goods — be publicly disclosed, according to a news release. The disclaimer “would ensure transparency by giving consumers the information they need to make informed decisions and not be misled,” per a bill memo.
“The premise of this bill is simple. If it’s AI, it has to say it’s AI,” Pielli said in a statement. “People deserve to know if what they’re looking at is real or not when making purchases. Disclosures should be clear and conspicuous in the same medium as the content generated to help consumers make better-informed and more secure purchases.”
“Artificial intelligence is becoming a more prevalent component of our everyday lives,” he continued. “As AI becomes more sophisticated, it becomes more difficult to verify the authenticity of the material and content produced. Additionally, the questionable veracity of some AI content has the potential to spread false and misleading information or images.”
Pielli added that his fellow lawmakers must “set a commonsense baseline helping our consumers make informed decisions and not be misled.”
When reached for comment, Pielli’s office referred the Daily Caller News Foundation to its press release from Wednesday. Shapiro’s office did not respond to the DCNF’s request for comment about whether the governor plans to support the bill.
The bill is currently heading to the Pennsylvania State Senate for further consideration. If the bill passes the Senate and is signed into law by Democratic Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, it would take effect in one year, according to WFMJ.
Eighty-three percent of U.S. advertising executives now report their company has used AI in the creative process, marking an increase from 60% in 2024, according to a January survey from IAB.
Eighty-nine percent of advertisers who have used generative AI to produce ads said they at least sometimes disclose that they used the technology, while less than half said they always do, according to IAB’s research.
There has also been a growing number of political campaign ads using AI deepfakes ahead of November’s midterm elections, Axios reported.
