ABUJA (CONVERSEER) – Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, on Thursday met with former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja for a closed-door discussion on national issues.
Obi disclosed the meeting in a post on his official X handle, where he hailed Jonathan as a respected statesman and elder.
“Today in Abuja, I met with my very dear elder brother, statesman, and leader, former President Goodluck Jonathan. We had a fruitful closed-door meeting and discussed the state of our dear nation,” Obi wrote.
Jonathan, who led Nigeria between 2010 and 2015, has in recent years positioned himself as a mediator in national and continental issues, particularly in conflict resolution and democratic strengthening efforts across Africa.
Through his Jonathan Foundation and as a special envoy of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), he has intervened in political crises in countries such as Mali, The Gambia, and South Sudan, earning recognition for his role in peace-building.
Former Anambra State Governor, Obi, on the other hand, has continued to sustain his presence in Nigeria’s political space since the 2023 general elections, where he came third behind Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
His campaign, which drew massive support from young Nigerians under the “Obidient” movement, altered the dynamics of Nigerian politics and positioned him as a major opposition figure.
Since the polls, Obi has embarked on consultations with political leaders, traditional rulers, and civil society groups, often stressing the need for reforms to address insecurity, economic decline, and poor governance.
Thursday’s meeting with Jonathan is the latest in this series of engagements, and analysts see it as part of wider conversations around possible political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections.
While neither Jonathan nor Obi gave further details of their discussion, the timing of the meeting is seen as significant, coming at a moment when calls for unity, economic revival, and stronger democratic institutions are dominating Nigeria’s political discourse.
