Operatives of the Ekiti State Police Command have arrested a 26-year-old man, identified as Sunday Samuel, over alleged cult-related activities in Efon Alaaye, Efon Local Government Area.
The suspect was apprehended late on August 7 following intelligence received by officers attached to the Efon Police Division about his alleged presence and activities in the town.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Ekiti State Command, Sunday Abutu, disclosed the arrest in a statement issued in Ado Ekiti on Sunday.
According to Abutu, police operatives immediately acted on the intelligence and launched an investigation that eventually led to Samuel’s arrest.
He said, “Upon receipt of the information, operatives immediately commenced investigation. The investigation led to the suspect’s arrest. A locally made single-barrel gun loaded with one cartridge and a mobile phone were recovered from him.”
The suspect was reportedly arrested at about 11:45pm, with the firearm and other items recovered during the operation.
Following the arrest, the Commissioner of Police in Ekiti State, CP Michael Falade, directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Ado Ekiti for further investigation.
Abutu said the police leadership had reaffirmed its determination to prevent cult-related violence and other criminal activities across the state.
He stated, “The commissioner assures residents that the command remains committed to preventing cult-related activities and other forms of criminality across the state.
“The command therefore urges members of the public to remain vigilant and continue to provide timely and credible information to the police, as discreet monitoring and security operations are ongoing.”
The arrest comes as security agencies in Ekiti intensify intelligence gathering, surveillance and targeted operations aimed at disrupting cult groups and other criminal networks operating across the state.
The police also urged residents to continue cooperating with security agencies by providing credible information that could assist ongoing efforts to maintain peace and public safety.
