Police heighten surveillance over Middle East tensions

By Frank Ulom

ABUJA (CONVERSEER) – The Nigeria Police Force has reassured Nigerians of sustained nationwide security vigilance amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, affirming its readiness to prevent any spillover threats or unrest.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, said the Force remained firmly committed to protecting lives, property, and national peace despite global developments.

Disu emphasised that Nigeria’s internal security situation remains stable and under control, but noted that proactive measures had been strengthened nationwide as a precaution.

“The Nigeria Police Force reassures all Nigerians of its unwavering commitment to the protection of lives, property, and national peace,” the statement said. “While Nigeria remains stable, the Force has reinforced proactive, intelligence-led policing measures across the country.”

Commissioners ordered to intensify monitoring

The Acting Inspector-General directed Commissioners of Police across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to heighten surveillance and intelligence gathering, particularly in the North West, North East, and North Central regions.

According to the police leadership, officers have been instructed to enhance visibility policing around worship centres, public spaces, and other sensitive locations, while strengthening cooperation with traditional rulers and religious leaders.

The directive also includes swift intervention against any individuals or groups attempting to exploit international tensions to incite unrest or sectarian divisions within Nigeria.

“The Nigeria Police Force reiterates that Nigeria will not serve as a theatre for foreign conflicts,” Disu said. “Any attempt to import external ideological or religious tensions into the country will be met with the full weight of the law.”

Appeal for calm and vigilance

The police chief urged community leaders to promote peace and unity, while calling on citizens to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding.

He further encouraged Nigerians to promptly report suspicious activities to the nearest police formation as part of collective efforts to safeguard national security.

The Force reaffirmed its preparedness to respond decisively to any threats, stressing its resolve to maintain stability and ensure the safety of all residents across the country.
