Pregnant Wife Accuses Nigerian Soldiers Of Killing Plateau Youth Leader, Dumping Corpse In Hospital After Labelling Him Bandit

A pregnant woman, identified only as Sandra, has accused some Nigerian soldiers of killing her husband and community youth leader, identified as Fwansgshak, in Plateau State and subsequently circulating his photographs online while falsely portraying him as a bandit who had opened fire on soldiers.

Fwansgshak was killed on Sunday, August 9, 2026, barely eight months after he married Sandra.

The circumstances surrounding his death have triggered anger among residents and members of his church, who maintained that the deceased was a community youth leader involved in local security efforts and was not a bandit as allegedly portrayed by the military.

SaharaReporters gathered that Fwansgshak and Sandra got married in a ceremony on December 13, 2025.

The young couple had been building their life together and were expecting their first child when tragedy struck on August 9, 2026.

According to accounts from his wife and members of the community, Fwansgshak had left home after returning from church with his pregnant wife on the cloudy Sunday afternoon.

The couple had reportedly been discussing the security situation in their community and the safety of their unborn child after a young man was ambushed on his way to church earlier that day, about three miles from their community.

Sandra, who was pregnant, was said to have been particularly concerned about the deteriorating security situation.

Fwansgshak, who served as a youth leader in the community, was also responsible for mobilising a local volunteer security team comprising about 10 young men.

The volunteers, according to the accounts, were poorly equipped and carried homemade pipe guns while trying to protect more than 500 residents from attacks.

The situation reportedly escalated when gunshots were heard around the community.

On December 13th, 2025, they were married in a beautiful ceremony. They didn’t know that eight months later, he would be killed by the very people who were supposed to protect him.

According to community members, the sound of the gunfire indicated the use of automatic weapons, which they associated with armed attackers who had previously terrorised the area.

The community security volunteers  attempted several times to get soldiers stationed about two miles away to respond to the attack.

However, when the soldiers failed to respond, Fwansgshak and the local security volunteers moved towards the direction of the gunfire in an attempt to protect residents.

The community members said the volunteers succeeded in pushing the attackers back towards the forest.

According to the accounts, soldiers later arrived at the scene and, instead of pursuing the fleeing attackers, opened fire on the civilian security volunteers.

Fwansgshak was hit by machine-gun fire and killed.

The soldiers were then accused of taking his body away and dumping it at a nearby hospital.

His family and community members were later reportedly shocked to see photographs of Fwansgshak circulating online, accompanied by claims that he was a bandit who had fired at soldiers.

His wife, church members and fellow community security volunteers rejected that account, insisting that Fwansgshak was a community leader who was responding to a security threat and was not an armed criminal.

Sandra, speaking after a church service, recalled how she had been married to Fwansgshak for only about eight months before his death.

“They said he was a bandit in your community. They said you should arrest him and take him away to be detained in your community. They said he was a bandit. I only lived with him for eight months. I didn’t even complete the eight months. It was during those eight months that he was killed,” she said.

She said although she had cried over her husband’s death, she knew that crying could not bring him back.

“It’s okay. I just thanked God. I cried, but even if I cried, he wouldn’t come back. They killed him, right? There’s nothing I can do about it,” Sandra said.

She also spoke emotionally about the child she is carrying, insisting that her husband’s death would not mean the end of his legacy.

“But if they think Fati has gone, Fati is still here. He left me pregnant. Fati is not dead. Fati will come back. I believe in God. This child will grow up and become somebody. It’s okay. I am grateful,” she said.

The account given by Sandra is also supported, according to community members, by the testimony of Fwansgshak’s church, where he reportedly served as secretary, as well as members of the local security team who allegedly witnessed the encounter.

The community members said the circumstances of his death were particularly disturbing because he was  killed while attempting to respond to a security emergency after the authorities reportedly failed to intervene.

They also questioned how a man who was known within the community as a youth leader and local security volunteer was subsequently presented to the public as a bandit.

The allegations raise fresh concerns about the conduct of security personnel operating in communities affected by armed attacks, particularly where civilian volunteers are involved in responding to attacks before security forces arrive.

The family and community are demanding answers over what happened on August 9 and why Fwansgshak was killed and subsequently portrayed as a bandit.
