Lagos, Nigeria – The Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) has named Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu among the world’s most corrupt leaders.
This announcement follows a global poll by the OCCRP, a network of investigative journalists and activists, aimed at spotlighting individuals notorious for promoting corruption and criminal activities.
While Kenyan President William Ruto topped the poll, President Tinubu ranked third, preceded by former Indonesian President Joko Widodo.
However, the overall “Person of the Year” title was controversially awarded to Bashar al-Assad, Syria’s ousted leader, who recently fled to Russia following decades of misrule.
“The judges acknowledge the importance of public interest and outrage at corruption,” OCCRP organisers stated.
Allegations Against President Tinubu
President Tinubu, 72, was recognised for his alleged role in perpetuating corruption throughout his political career. During his eight-year tenure as governor of Lagos State (1999–2007), Tinubu reportedly amassed significant personal wealth, a claim that continues to cast a shadow over his presidency.
Since assuming office as Nigeria’s president in May 2023, Tinubu has faced criticism for awarding a multitrillion-naira Lagos-Calabar road project to a company linked to his son.
The controversial project, Nigeria’s most ambitious infrastructure initiative, heightened fears of a repeat of the alleged financial mismanagement associated with his governorship.
Additionally, Tinubu’s past as a convicted drug trafficker in Chicago and allegations of certificate forgery further influenced his ranking in the OCCRP poll. Despite these claims, the Nigerian leader has consistently denied any wrongdoing.

- Indian businessman Gautam Adani
Response to the Announcement
Efforts to obtain comments from President Tinubu’s spokesperson on Tuesday were unsuccessful. However, the recognition has reignited debates over governance, accountability, and the fight against corruption in Nigeria.
