2025 Budget Fails to Meet Anticipated Needs – PRP

ABUJA – As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to celebrate International Workers’ Day, the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has paid glowing tribute to the nation’s workers, praising their unwavering resilience and indispensable role in national development.

In a statement signed by Comrade Muhammed Ishaq, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, the PRP marked the occasion of May Day by reaffirming its solidarity with Nigeria’s labour force and reiterating its historical ties to the formal recognition of the day as a national holiday.

“On this momentous occasion of May Day, the PRP stands in solidarity with Nigeria’s hardworking and resilient labour force,” the statement read. “We honour and appreciate the invaluable contributions of our workers, whose efforts drive the wheels of progress, foster economic vitality, and sustain our national development.”

Highlighting the origins of May Day in Nigeria, the party noted that it was the PRP-led governments of Kano and Kaduna States that first declared May 1st a holiday in 1980, with national adoption following in 1981—a milestone in the recognition of workers’ rights in the country.

The PRP emphasised that while May Day is a time for celebration, it must also serve as a period of reflection on the ongoing challenges faced by the working class, including fair wages, job security, and decent working conditions.

“We call upon the federal and state governments to ensure that workers’ rights are upheld and that they are fairly compensated for their labour,” the statement urged. “Policies must prioritise decent work and the protection of labour rights.”

Reaffirming its commitment to social justice, the PRP pledged to continue advocating for the welfare of Nigeria’s working class and marginalised populations, urging all citizens to unite in building a just and equitable society.

“As we celebrate May Day, let us commit ourselves to building a Nigeria where every worker is valued, esteemed, and afforded the respect they so richly deserve,” Comrade Ishaq concluded.

The PRP’s message comes at a time when Nigerian workers continue to agitate for reforms in wage structure, improved employment conditions, and better government accountability. The party’s historical connection to the institutionalisation of May Day in Nigeria reinforces its longstanding advocacy for the rights and dignity of labour.
