The Police Service Commission (PSC) has dismissed four senior police officers and sanctioned 31 others for various offences.

The commission in a statement on Tuesday by its spokesperson, Torty Njoku Kalu, said the affected officers were penalised after being found culpable of serious breaches, including gross misconduct, unprofessional behaviour and conduct considered inappropriate for public officers.

According to the statement, the decisions were taken during the commission’s plenary session held in Abuja.

Beyond the dismissal of the four officers, the PSC also approved a series of disciplinary measures affecting several personnel including the demotion of 10 officers.

Two others were compulsorily retired, three received warning letters, while seven officers were cleared of all allegations.

“In addition to the dismissals, the commission approved a range of disciplinary actions which affected multiple officers,” the PSC spokesperson said.

“Ten senior officers received reductions in rank: three Superintendents of Police were reduced to Deputy Superintendents of Police, two Deputy Superintendents of Police to Assistant Superintendents of Police, and five Assistant Superintendents of Police to Inspectors. Two officers were also compulsorily retired in the public interest.

“Other sanctions included severe reprimands issued to ten officers, reprimands to five officers, warning letters to three officers, and a letter of advice to one officer. In addition, seven officers were exonerated and cleared of wrongdoing.”

Reacting to the outcome, PSC Chairman Hashimu Salihu Argungu stressed that the commission remains committed to enforcing discipline within the Nigeria Police Force.

Argungu said the commission would continue to ensure that acts of indiscipline and misconduct attract appropriate sanctions, adding that professionalism and accountability would remain central to its oversight of the police.
