Vice President Kashim Shettima has commenced a two-week leave—his first since assuming office more than three years ago—saying the break will be devoted to study, reflection and intellectual renewal to strengthen his capacity for national service.
The leave, which began on Thursday, August 6, followed the approval of President Bola Tinubu.
According to a statement by his media aide, Stanley Nkwocha, the Vice President will use the period to review the administration’s ongoing programmes, deepen his understanding of emerging national and global policy issues, and prepare for the next phase of implementing the Renewed Hope Agenda.
“During the period, the Vice President will devote time to study, reflection and intellectual renewal as part of efforts to strengthen his capacity for continued service to the nation,” the statement said.
It noted that the leave comes after more than three years of uninterrupted service since Shettima and President Tinubu assumed office on 29 May 2023.
The statement highlighted the Vice President’s role in coordinating and supervising key government initiatives spanning economic development, food security, humanitarian affairs, digital transformation, job creation and regional cooperation.
Shettima has also chaired the National Economic Council (NEC), bringing together the 36 state governors, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and other senior government officials to deliberate on policies affecting the economy and the welfare of Nigerians.
Beyond his domestic responsibilities, the Vice President has represented President Tinubu at major international and regional engagements, promoting Nigeria’s interests in economic integration, peace and security, climate action, investment and sustainable development.
The Presidency said the leave would provide an opportunity for Shettima to return with renewed vigour as the administration intensifies the implementation of its policy agenda.
“Senator Shettima remains deeply committed to the ideals of loyalty, duty and service that have defined his role in the administration, as well as to supporting President Tinubu’s efforts to build a more secure, productive and prosperous Nigeria,” the statement added.
It further stated that the Vice President “will return to office at the end of the two-week leave period and resume his official responsibilities with renewed energy and dedication to the service of the nation.”
