South Africa’s female football team on Thursday beat Nigeria’s Super Falcon 2-1 in Casablanca to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
The defeat brings Super Falcons’ remarkable reign as Africa’s ever-present representatives at the FIFA Women’s World Cup to an end, meaning, Nigeria will miss the global tournament for the first time since its inception in 1991.
For more than three decades, Nigeria had remained a constant at the Women’s World Cup, qualifying for every edition since the inaugural tournament in China in 1991.
That extraordinary record has now been shattered after the Falcons failed to make the most of their final opportunity to remain in contention.
Nigeria’s hopes had already been placed under severe pressure following their quarter-final elimination by Cameroon at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, a result that denied the reigning African champions an automatic World Cup ticket.
The loss to Cameroon forced the Falcons into the qualification play-off route, where they needed to overcome South Africa to keep their hopes of reaching Brazil 2027 alive. But South Africa produced the decisive performance that condemned Nigeria to a historic absence from the world’s biggest women’s football tournament.
The defeat represents one of the darkest moments in the history of Nigerian women’s football.
For years, the Super Falcons were regarded as the standard-bearers of the women’s game in Africa, a team that consistently carried the continent’s hopes on the global stage.
Since their World Cup debut in 1991, the Falcons had survived different generations of players, coaching changes, administrative crises and difficult qualification campaigns without ever failing to reach the finals.
Their finest World Cup outing came in 1999, when they reached the quarter-finals in the United States, a landmark achievement that remains the best performance by an African women’s team at the tournament alongside later quarter-final appearances by other African nations.
