Three South Korean military officers were injured Monday after a suspected landmine exploded inside the heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone separating South Korea and Pyongyang.
The blast occurred around 10:50 a.m. south of the Military Demarcation Line in the western portion of the DMZ while South Korean troops were conducting a search and route-clearance operation, Yonhap News Agency reported, citing South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff. Investigators have not determined whether the suspected mine belonged to South Korea, was planted by North Korean troops or originated in the North before being displaced by heavy rainfall, according to the outlet.
Two senior military officers suffered serious injuries in the explosion, including one who lost an ankle, Yonhap reported, citing military sources. None of the three officers were believed to have suffered life-threatening injuries.

The South Korean Embassy in Washington, the South Korean Military and U.S. Forces Korea did not respond to a request for comment.
The possibility of North Korean mines migrating south due to weather had already raised concerns before Monday’s explosion. The United Nations Command said in June that its primary safety concern surrounding North Korean landmines inside the DMZ was weather-related mine migration.
South Korea’s military was also preparing for the danger before the summer rains intensified. The Army directed units conducting lengthy operations inside the DMZ to account for the possibility of mines being displaced by heavy rainfall, according to the military-run Korea Defense Daily.
North Korea has simultaneously been expanding fortifications and other construction inside the DMZ since April 2024. North Korean troops have planted land mines, reinforced tactical roads and constructed what appeared to be anti-tank barriers while deploying large numbers of soldiers along the border, Reuters reported, citing South Korea’s military.
South Korea dispatched an emergency helicopter into the DMZ in coordination with the U.S.-led United Nations Command to evacuate the wounded personnel, the outlet reported, citing military sources.
South Korean military investigators believe there is a high probability that a landmine caused the explosion but are keeping several possibilities open, Yonhap reported, citing the JCS.
UNC said it had investigated and cleared the first alleged site while inquiries at other locations remained underway. Placing mines south of the MDL would cease to be defensive activity and constitute an automatic Armistice violation, according to the United Nations Command.

People Power Party Rep. Yu Yong-weon claimed Monday that the explosion occurred near an area where North Korean troops were suspected of crossing the DMZ to bury mines, according to Yonhap. A JCS official disputed that connection, telling the outlet the explosion site was “distanced” from the area Yu referenced.
Monday’s incident was the first landmine explosion on the South Korean side of the DMZ to cause a serious injury since August 2015, Yonhap reported.
A joint investigation determined that North Korean troops had illegally crossed the MDL and deliberately planted wooden-box mines along a South Korean patrol route before the Aug. 4, 2015 explosions seriously wounded two soldiers, according to South Korea’s 2016 Defense White Paper.
The blast was also the first landmine explosion anywhere inside the DMZ since November 2025, when a South Korean soldier fractured an ankle while conducting a mine-detection mission, Yonhap reported.
