Popular South Sudanese model Wal Lat Ruop has emerged as one of the new faces on the international fashion circuit after beginning his journey from Kenya’s Kakuma Refugee Camp.

Ruop, 23, has featured in runway shows for several leading fashion brands, including Prada, Louis Vuitton, Maison Margiela, Saint Laurent, Givenchy, Amiri, Loewe, Bally, Lacoste, Casablanca, Maison Valentino and Ann Demeulemeester.

Born on January 28, 2003, in Rubkona, South Sudan, Ruop moved with his family to Kakuma Refugee Camp in northwestern Kenya after they fled conflict in their home country. He grew up with three brothers and three sisters, while his father died in 2018.

His modelling career began after he was discovered at the age of 19 while living in Eldoret, Kenya, by RADG Models Management, which later connected him with international opportunities.

Ruop made his runway debut for Prada in January 2023 and has since appeared in several major fashion shows, including Maison Margiela Fall/Winter 2023, Louis Vuitton Fall/Winter 2023, Saint Laurent Men’s Fall/Winter 2024 and Prada Men’s Spring/Summer 2026.

His appearance in Maison Margiela’s Fall/Winter 2023 show came under the creative direction of designer John Galliano, with styling by Olivier Rizzo and beauty direction by makeup artist Pat McGrath.

Ruop’s career comes as South Sudan continues to produce internationally recognised models.

Figures such as Alek Wek, Adut Akech and Anok Yai have gained global recognition and contributed to increased visibility for South Sudanese talent in the fashion industry.

His journey also reflects the growing interest of international modelling agencies in scouting talent across East Africa, including refugee communities.

The trend has generated discussions within the industry on the need to ensure adequate welfare and protection for young models working internationally.

Outside modelling, Ruop shares updates about his work through his social media accounts and maintains a professional profile on industry platform.
