Summer is now an extreme weather event.

Doom fear mongering – ring a bell?

TOM ED

As the UK celebrates its 7th prime minister in 10 years without demonstrating any idea as to why, and Labour finding a new saviour while changing no policies, and doubling down on crippling taxes, it’s increasingly hard to know which adult is in which room. It’s unclear which of them is responsible for the Severe High Temperature Warning taglines on every news site, forum and social media, they’re everywhere, one will unfurl from your toothpaste if you’re not too hot to brush your teeth.

*PS. this is obviously an AI piss take.

Meanwhile, the media are in WEATHER PANIC mode. Accidentally watching the news is like wandering onto a training course on how to be terrified. You instinctively press OFF, but macabre intrigue keeps you tuned in. If you’ve not seen the news for a while it’s not dissimilar to time travel. Did we really once voluntarily tune into sombre newsreaders, pompous with self importance and speaking with a gravitas better suited to doing talking owl impressions? This report was about the recent warm weather. Over footage of people in parks stripped to their pants and drinking wine, a voiceover intoned sunny days were something to be terrified of. The relaxed picnics and park games somewhat undermined the implied terror, Further footage of people in shirt sleeves crossing a bridge looking warm implied that Greta Thunberg, before she got bored of the climate changing too slowly and crossing the Atlantic in a boat made of lettuce and kale or something, was right when she tweeted:

It’s unclear if this ‘top’ scientist has been forcibly removed from his post mainlining the manmade change kool-aid or not, but the tweet has sadly been deleted. Once again it’s clear that the greatest risk to mankind is not using fossil fuels as a dependable power source. The greater risk to mankind is actually the cure to the perceived threat: power cuts, expensive energy and crippled economies.

The fear news shamelessly continued in its promotion of climate change with footage of people enjoying ice creams and interviewing a few talking heads, who mainly confirmed that ‘it’s hot.’ Another added, ‘it’s making sleeping difficult.’ The report struggled to find anyone to blame manmade climate change so addressed this in the voiceover, delivered as not just fact, but terrifyingly irrefutable fact, despite every doom prediction proving as reliable as a solar panel at midnight. They missed a trick with the guarantee heart-tug of cancelled dog shows with coiffured dogs gutted to be robbed of a rosette.

In Germany former Covid Minister Karl Lauterbach denounced ‘Right-wing conspiracy theorists’ for not taking sunny summer weather seriously enough. He was unclear how to take summer days seriously – no Haitian shirts or straw skirts? – nor how this might dampen the temperatures.

Local forums reveal how deeply the programming goes. Realising how readily people attribute a summer’s day to climate change is a shock reminiscent of leaving your home during Covid and realising you’re the sole person not wearing a pointless face mask. One post was titled: This country’s infrastructure is not suitable for this heat, under which people gleefully accused anyone suggesting change as being an intrinsic characteristic of climate as voting Reform. The irony that concern over rapid social change and over dependence upon the State is not a valid concern, but climate change is, apparently eluding them, along with capacity for critical thinking. There’s reference to the heat ‘ramping up’, which you just know is repeated from the ‘news’ where temperatures numbers are no longer seen, only the alarming RED they’re written in’ they’re even running out of doom shades.

As to the temperatures, does anyone ask where the readings are from? Many readings are taken from growing urban heat islands with modern combinations of sun-reflecting glass and metal, not to mention air con units, while other readings are even from weather stations that no longer exist. The UK’s highest temperature on record of 40.3C in 2022 at RAF Coningsby, which coincided with the landing of several Typhoon fighter jets; it’s like measuring sugar content of the country at the Cadbury’s factory.

Admittedly the hot weather does provide opportunities to lie on your bed beneath a damp flannel and excuse yourself of all responsibility, but the summer we spent winder yearning for like a child for a rock pool, is not our enemy. Cold kills far more people than the heat and we are a temperate species. We’re content enough to ask AI how large a rubber glove can be inflated before bursting, blind to their Co2 emissions, but Co2 is a side product of the quality of life we enjoy, and with conflicting scientific proof that it drives up global temperature, rathe than the settled science of the news.

We are always being manipulated in some way or another, by our children, by marketing, by the government and the news and Taylor Swift. Schools are even half day closing due to there heat. If Australia did this there would be no schooling. since Covid children now see school as optional, and their lives easily disrupted without consequence. Mind you, it’s a break from the programming, although closing the school due to climate change is the equivalent of a term’s work on the subject. While we don’t want our children returning home half-cooked like they’ve been playing hunger games in the Mad Max Thunderdome, they do need to understand that resilience gets you through, not retreating. If the weather is warming then surely we adapt or die. We’ve done this forever. The Elizabethans didn’t close their ruff factories because it was raining. It won’t be long before kids are hijacking the central heating for a day off.

The Roman centurions didn’t stop marching in the heat, they simply planted trees for shade. Tips for staying cool are now more literal than sartorial. Meanwhile the net Zero acolytes are celebrating the summer as justification for even harsher intervention in our lives until we’re faced with weather lockdowns and power cuts. The best way to stay cool is to avoid the government patronising us with advice:

Open windows

Draw curtains and blinds

Drink water

Use fans

Stop banging on about how hot it is

Turn off 3-bar heaters.

Don’t leave oven door open

Go shopping in Iceland (the shop not the country)

Do not write heat terror themed substacks.

Phew, what a predictable forecast!

HENRY GETLEY

THE other week, I wrote in TCW that the Met Office was organising a get-together of climate zealots in London to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1976 heatwave. It promised a ‘new analysis’ of the event and a weather forecast for 2056.

Shameless cynic that I am, I wrote of these cultists: ‘With most of their livelihoods dependent on sustaining the myth of man-made global warming, it’s not hard to guess what that future weather forecast will be.’

The conference duly took place this week. And lo, my prediction turned out to be commendably accurate. Ed Hawkins, professor of climate science at the University of Reading, claimed that in 2056 we could ‘plausibly’ be sizzling in 45C (113F) heat.

The culprit? No prizes for guessing. Professor Hayley Fowler, of Newcastle University, intoned: ‘We are showing the public that these impacts will become part of normal life in the coming decades if we don’t rapidly reduce fossil fuel emissions . . .’

Professor Paul Behrens, from the University of Oxford, made our flesh creep even further by pronouncing: ‘British families will struggle to put food on the table as heatwaves escalate over the coming decades and cause multiple harvest failures in the UK and around the world.’

So there you have it – same old, same old. The science is declared to be settled, with no hope of any alternative view being given a proper airing. And thus the funding is secure to keep the climate change community in well-paid jobs. It seems that whatever your area of study, you have only to add the words ‘global warming’ to it to be awarded a grant.

Meanwhile, outside the conference venue – presumably to the delight of delegates – the thermometer was climbing to around 30C (86F). And pundits were forecasting that the June record temperature of 35.6C (96.08F), set in 1976, would soon be broken.

The media were whipping up their usual frenzy. The Daily Mail website declared that the UK was bracing for its ‘hottest day ever’. Oh, really? Would that be hotter than the 2,300C (3,680°F) the planet experienced 4.5billion years ago? If so, we’d all be well advised to start slapping on the Factor 50.

The climate stitch-up is all very depressing for simpletons like me, who’ve been around long enough to know that heat in summer and cold in winter are not that unusual. And who know that long before Man was around, the Earth has boiled and frozen many times. Unfortunately, the climate industry is too firmly embedded and too lucrative for there to be any chance of it being debunked any time soon. Even if mile-high glaciers start creeping down from the Arctic again, they’ll still be telling us it’s caused by man-made global warming.

To paraphrase Nineteen Eighty-Four, if you want a vision of the future, imagine Ed Miliband, Greta Thunberg, the Met Office, the BBC, the IPCC and a horde of other such grifters stamping on a climate sceptic’s face – for ever.
