Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo has expressed confidence in the imminent return of Taiwo Awoniyi after the Nigerian forward missed his team’s 2-1 defeat to Fulham.
The Tricky Trees struggled without their key striker, who was sidelined after sustaining a broken nose in a collision with Exeter goalkeeper Joe Whitworth during Forest’s FA Cup victory. His injury forced him to sit out the crucial Premier League clash at Craven Cottage.
Espirito Santo, speaking post-match, clarified that Awoniyi’s absence was due to Premier League concussion protocols rather than a lack of fitness.
“We didn’t have the clearance from the Premier League about the concussion protocols, so he was not able to go in the squad,” Nuno explained, as quoted by Nottingham post. “I hope he will be OK for the next one.”

Despite missing the fixture, reports indicate that Awoniyi is feeling fine. However, Forest must comply with league-mandated safety regulations before he can make his return.
“He is feeling fine, it is about making sure we follow the protocols,” Nuno added. “He was OK, but we have to respect the protocols.”
With his recovery progressing well, Awoniyi might take to the pitch wearing a protective mask, similar to his compatriot Victor Osimhen, who famously plays with one after suffering a similar injury.

Forest will hope to have their Nigerian talisman available for their upcoming Premier League fixture against Newcastle as they continue their fight to climb the league table.
