…As US Consulate, FBI Applaud Chairman’s Strategic Leadership

Since his appointment as Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr Ola Olukoyede has shifted the EFCC from a reactive enforcement body to a proactive institution built on three pillars: prevention, large-scale asset recovery, and institutional compliance. Under his leadership, the Commission has recorded operational breakthroughs, historic financial recoveries, and policy reforms that are redefining Nigeria’s anti-corruption architecture and earning strong international recognition.

A defining feature of this era has been the aggressive crackdown on transnational cyber syndicates. Olukoyede prioritized intelligence-driven operations against sophisticated foreign fraud networks exploiting Nigerian digital infrastructure. This yielded a major bust with the arrest of nearly 200 foreign nationals — including citizens of China, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Pakistan — linked to cross-border cyberattacks.

The Commission has also intensified its response to sextortion and other technology-enabled crimes targeting vulnerable victims globally. In this regard, the EFCC has received commendation from key international partners. The U.S. Consulate in Nigeria and the FBI have publicly praised the EFCC Chairman for the Commission’s decisive action in tackling sextortion rings and cross-border financial crimes, noting the agency’s growing capacity for joint investigations, victim support, and real-time intelligence sharing. This international validation underscores the EFCC’s evolving role in combating crimes that transcend national borders.

Beyond arrests, Olukoyede’s EFCC has focused on converting proceeds of crime into public good. Through “Operation Eagle Flush,” assets recovered from a major cybercrime ring — including 501 double-step bunk beds and 939 mattresses — were handed over to the Federal Ministry of Education for public use, reflecting a new emphasis on restitution.

Financially, the period has recorded landmark achievements. The EFCC’s aggressive asset tracing, prosecution of money laundering cases, and alignment with global standards were instrumental to Nigeria’s historic exit from the Financial Action Task Force grey list. The exit has significantly restored international investor confidence in the economy. Domestically, the Commission has also recorded hundreds of billions of naira in recoveries, the highest in recent history, with funds returned directly to the federal treasury.

On policy and prevention, Olukoyede has moved beyond enforcement. In partnership with the Corporate Affairs Commission, the EFCC enforced the mandatory registration of Point of Sale operators nationwide to block loopholes used for moving kidnap ransoms and laundering illicit funds. Internally, the Commission has realigned its frameworks to prioritize public enlightenment, data-driven intelligence, and strict e-procurement compliance aimed at curbing contract and procurement fraud in government institutions.

The reforms have attracted both national and international accolades. Olukoyede has received the Business Day Excellence in Public Service Award and the National Transformation Award, recognitions reserved for public chief executives with demonstrable impact. Operationally, dozens of EFCC personnel have also earned certification from the FBI Cyber Division following joint field operations and capacity-building programs, further strengthening the agency’s ability to confront complex financial crimes.

The Olukoyede leadership has fundamentally repositioned the EFCC. By combining decisive action against cyber syndicates and sextortion networks, historic asset recoveries, systemic prevention policies, and deepened global partnerships — INCLUDING commendations from the U.S. Consulate and the FBI — the Commission is moving from chasing corruption after the fact to preventing it. The outcome is an anti-graft agency that is not only recovering stolen wealth, but also restoring Nigeria’s credibility on the global stage.
