Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has urged young Nigerians to pursue success with determination, telling graduates that “the world will not give you what you believe you deserve; it will only give you what you demand of it.”
Sanwo-Olu made the remark on Sunday while delivering the convocation lecture at Babcock University’s 24th Undergraduate Convocation Ceremony in Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State.
At the ceremony, the governor received the university’s Leadership and Service Award in recognition of what the institution described as his outstanding performance and excellence in governance in Lagos State.
Speaking on the theme, “Breaking New Ground: Faith, Grit and the Work of New Beginnings,” Sanwo-Olu told the graduating Class of 2026, known as the NOVA Class, that leadership is built on integrity, accountability and service to humanity.
He urged the graduates to become problem-solvers by developing evidence-based solutions to societal challenges while engaging government constructively to promote sustainable development.
“The world will not give you what you believe you deserve; it will only give you what you demand of it,” he said.
“I am not a graduand. I am here because, as a leader, we need to continue to encourage young people, share our experiences with them and let them know that life is waiting for them out there,” he said.
Sanwo-Olu said leaders must act with the fear of God and remain conscious of the example they set for younger generations.
Reflecting on his years in office, the governor recalled leading Lagos through the COVID-19 pandemic and the #EndSARS protests, saying difficult periods reveal the true test of leadership.
He highlighted major investments by his administration in transportation, education, healthcare, housing and technology.
According to him, Lagos State’s budget has grown from less than N900bn in 2019 to N4.44tn in 2026. He also said the state was recognised by the Dealroom Global Tech Ecosystem Index in 2025 as the world’s fastest-growing technology ecosystem.
Sanwo-Olu also pointed to the establishment of two new state-owned universities, the ongoing construction of what he described as the largest children’s hospital in sub-Saharan Africa, the introduction of digital learning in public schools and the delivery of thousands of housing units.
He commended Babcock University for its contribution to higher education and for producing graduates who have distinguished themselves in different professions.
Speaking on behalf of the graduating class, Miss Simisola Abore described their academic journey as demanding but fulfilling. She urged her colleagues to uphold the university’s values and make meaningful contributions to society.
The convocation also celebrated academic excellence, with Miss Amosu Oluwapelumi emerging as the Overall Best Full-Time Graduating Student. She received a cash prize of N10m and attributed her achievement to consistency, discipline and hard work.
