Three people were injured on Wednesday after a MACK flatbed truck suffered brake failure and rammed into a Toyota Sienna and two commercial tricycles along the LASU-Isheri Road at Iyana School, inward Igando, Lagos.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said its officers rescued the trapped victims and restored traffic after the multi-vehicle crash.

In a statement by its spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, the agency said preliminary findings showed the truck developed a “catastrophic brake failure”, causing the driver to lose control before crashing into the other vehicles.

LASTMA said officers on routine patrol in the area immediately activated the agency’s emergency response protocol.

The agency said the swift response helped rescue the victims, prevent secondary crashes and restore the free flow of traffic along the route.

It added that its personnel, working with officers of the Iba Police Division, evacuated the damaged vehicles and cleared the scene.

LASTMA said the crash left one man and two women with severe fractures.

“The accident left three occupants one male and two females with varying degrees of severe fracture injuries,” the agency said.

The victims were rescued from the wreckage and taken to El-Shaddai Hospital, where they are receiving specialised medical treatment.

The vehicles involved were the MACK flatbed truck, a Toyota Sienna with registration number FGC 80 XE and a TVS commercial tricycle with registration number LSR 604 QP.

LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commended the agency’s emergency personnel for their swift response during the rescue operation.

He urged motorists, especially operators of articulated and heavy-duty vehicles, to carry out thorough mechanical checks before every trip, paying particular attention to their braking systems.

Bakare-Oki said routine maintenance of critical vehicle components remains essential to reducing avoidable road crashes and improving road safety in Lagos.

He also urged motorists to obey traffic regulations and report road emergencies through LASTMA’s toll-free emergency short code, 3367, for prompt response.
