President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the renaming of the completed Institute of Petroleum Studies in Kaduna State in honour of late pro-democracy advocate, General Musa Yar’Adua.
The President made the announcement on Friday during his nationwide Democracy Day address, as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 2026 celebration of uninterrupted democratic rule.
According to Tinubu, the institution will now be known as the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology.
He said the decision was taken to recognise Yar’Adua’s contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development, as well as his vision of national unity and political cooperation.
“Among the architects of modern democratic Nigeria, we honour General Musa Yar’Adua for his vision of national partnership,” the President said.
Tinubu described the late military officer and politician as a key figure in Nigeria’s democratic journey, noting that his efforts helped shape the struggle for the restoration of civilian rule.
Yar’Adua, who died in detention in 1997 during military rule, was widely regarded as one of the leading voices advocating for democracy and reform in the country.
The President said the renaming forms part of broader efforts to preserve the legacy of individuals who played significant roles in advancing democracy and national development in Nigeria.
