Troops arrest suspected foreign ISIS operative in Borno

Nigerian troops have arrested a suspected foreign Islamic State (ISIS) operative believed to be an Arab of Moroccan origin during a counter-terrorism operation in Borno State, marking what security sources described as a significant intelligence breakthrough in the fight against insurgency in the Lake Chad region.

The suspect was apprehended in Cross Kauwa, Kukawa Local Government Area, after troops repelled a coordinated terrorist attack on the community, forcing the insurgents to retreat and abandon operational equipment. The arrest followed an intensive pursuit operation launched by security forces along the terrorists’ escape routes.

Security sources disclosed that soldiers recovered high-frequency hand-held radios and other communication devices abandoned during the failed assault.

Intelligence extracted from the recovered materials enabled troops to widen their operation into the Lake Chad Islands axis and towards Abadam Local Government Area, where the suspected foreign operative was eventually intercepted.

According to counter-insurgency publication Zagazola Makama, the suspect had already been under intelligence surveillance after investigators jointly analysed video footage recovered from a camcorder seized during the Cross Kauwa operation. The device reportedly belonged to a terrorist cameraman killed during the encounter.

The forensic review of the footage, carried out with the support of international partners, reportedly helped investigators identify the suspect and establish suspected links to the Islamic State network operating across the Lake Chad Basin.

Military authorities have since airlifted the suspect to a secure facility, where he is undergoing interrogation and intelligence exploitation. Investigators are expected to determine his role within the terrorist organisation, how he entered Nigeria, and whether he participated in operational planning, training, communications or propaganda activities.

Security analysts noted that extremist groups frequently deploy media operatives alongside combat units to document attacks for propaganda, recruitment and operational assessment, making the recovery of the camcorder and subsequent arrest a major intelligence success.

The development is also expected to provide fresh insights into the structure, financing and cross-border operations of terrorist groups active in the region.

Security agencies have long maintained that while ISWAP largely recruits fighters locally, foreign operatives from countries including Iraq, Somalia and Morocco have played specialist roles in communications, explosives handling, media production and strategic coordination.

Military officials said interrogation of the suspect is ongoing, stressing that further operational details remain confidential to protect ongoing counter-terrorism operations. They added that intelligence gathered from the suspect could help security agencies dismantle additional terrorist cells and expose transnational routes used by insurgent networks operating across the Lake Chad Basin.
