Troops Kill Suspected Herder, Recover AK-47

Troops of the Joint Task Force, Operation Whirl Stroke, in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force, have foiled an attack by suspected armed herders in Azege Village, Tombo Council Ward, Logo Local Government Area of Benue State.

The troops responded to a distress call on Monday, August 10, 2026, that armed men were attacking the community, according to the Acting Media Information Officer of the JTF, Lt. Ahmad Zubairu Zubairu.

Zubairu said the troops mobilised to the area and engaged the attackers in a gun battle, forcing them to flee in different directions.

He said the soldiers pursued the fleeing attackers and later found one of the suspected armed herders dead following the encounter.

The troops recovered an AK-47 rifle, one magazine loaded with 16 rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition and a Nokia mobile phone from the scene.

The statement read in part, “Troops immediately pursued the fleeing attackers and subsequently discovered one armed herder neutralised during the encounter.

“Recovered from the scene were one AK-47 rifle, one magazine loaded with 16 rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition and one Nokia mobile phone.”

The remains of the suspected attacker were later evacuated by the police, while efforts were ongoing to track down other members of the group who escaped.

The JTF commended the troops for their resilience and the police for their cooperation during the operation.

Residents were also urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements and activities to security agencies.
