Two former Iranian footballers say they’re overwhelmed with pride after finally being handed Australian citizenship, months after being branded traitors back home for daring to skip Iran’s national anthem before a match.
Fatemeh Pasandideh and Atefeh Ramezanisadeh were among seven players from Iran’s delegation who begged Australia for protection following the bold protest at the women’s Asian Cup in March.
The stunt left Iran’s leadership red-faced and even earned praise from US President Donald Trump, but five of the seven eventually caved and returned home.
Not Pasandideh and Ramezanisadeh though – the pair held their ground and were officially sworn in as Australian citizens at a Wednesday ceremony overseen by Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke.
“Yesterday was a truly special and unforgettable day for me. I feel proud and deeply grateful to become an Australian citizen,” Ramezanisadeh gushed.
Pasandideh was just as emotional, admitting the moment meant far more than words could ever capture after everything the two had been through.
Barely a week after seeking asylum, the footballers were already spotted training with Brisbane Roar, who wasted no time congratulating them on Wednesday.
A club spokesperson didn’t hold back either, saying what the duo had endured since February was more than most people face in an entire lifetime – and made clear Queensland was now their home, with an open invitation to return and train anytime.
As for the five who packed up and headed back to Iran? Their fate remains a mystery.
