Leaders of the Ugep and Idomi communities have agreed to bury their differences and work together to restore peace, following a high-level reconciliation meeting convened by the Chairman of Yakurr Local Government Council, Mr Yibala Igri Inyang.

The peace and security dialogue, held yesterday at the Council Hall in Biase Local Government Area, brought together traditional rulers, security officials, and key stakeholders from both sides. The aim was to defuse rising tensions and lay the groundwork for long-term harmony between the neighbouring communities.

In attendance were the Paramount Ruler of Yakurr and Obol Lopon of Ugep, HRM Obol Ofem Ubana, with members of his Council of Chiefs, and the Obol Lopon of Idomi, HRH Obol Ofem Edet, alongside Idomi community representatives. Also present were the State Security Adviser, Major Gen. O.U. Obono (rtd), and other security operatives and government officials.

The intervention became necessary after recent friction between the two communities. While discussions noted that the boundary demarcation process is still ongoing with the relevant authorities, participants stressed that the immediate priority was mending the strained relationship between the traditional institutions. Both sides acknowledged that the prolonged disagreement between the two monarchs had worsened mistrust among residents.

Addressing the gathering, Chairman Inyang made a passionate appeal for unity, reminding the leaders that Ugep and Idomi share a common history and heritage that predates the current dispute. He argued that without reconciliation at the top, lasting peace at the grassroots would remain elusive.

Responding to the call, both royal fathers agreed to reconcile and set aside their differences for the sake of their people. They committed to returning home to promote calm, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence among their subjects.

At the end of the deliberations, the parties adopted three key resolutions:

1. Anyone found spreading false or unverified information that could trigger violence between the communities will be identified and sanctioned.

2. Where the culprits of any future disturbance cannot be traced, the traditional leadership of the affected community will bear responsibility.

3. Both communities agreed to immediately restore and protect the free movement of people, social ties, and lawful trade between Ugep and Idomi.

The meeting closed in an atmosphere of optimism, with stakeholders praising the Chairman’s swift action and leadership in preventing further escalation and protecting stability in Yakurr and its environs.
