UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced a tougher stance on illegal foreign workers, vowing to clamp down on the growing issue as part of his government’s immigration reforms.
Since assuming office in July 2024, Starmer has introduced a series of measures aimed at addressing immigration, with analysts characterizing his approach as “firm but fair” compared to the policies of his predecessor, Rishi Sunak, and Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch.
However, mounting pressure from the Conservatives and the increasing influence of Reform UK—both of which advocate for stricter immigration controls—has compelled Starmer to adopt a more stringent position to retain public confidence.
“Too many people are able to come to the UK and work illegally. We are putting an end to it,” Starmer tweeted on Monday.
His statement coincided with a Home Office announcement of a new wave of immigration raids targeting illegal workers. The agency also revealed a record number of deportations, with illegal working visits and arrests surging by approximately 38% since Labour came into power.
In a controversial move, the government is reportedly planning to broadcast footage of deportations to demonstrate its commitment to tackling illegal immigration.

Starmer’s renewed focus on immigration follows his criticism of the previous Conservative administration in November 2024, where he accused them of mishandling migration. “They drove up immigration numbers; we will get them down,” he stated.
The Prime Minister’s latest measures come just days after Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch proposed her own tough immigration policies, signaling a broader political battle over the issue.
As Starmer’s government seeks to balance fairness with enforcement, the crackdown on illegal foreign workers underscores the growing political and public demand for stricter immigration controls in the UK.
