UN boosts security at South Sudan refugee camp

Makpandu camp hosts thousands of refugees who fled conflict in neighbouring Sudan, seeking safety in South Sudan. However, rising insecurity has renewed fears among displaced families.

By Joe Udo

JUBA (CONVERSEER) – The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has intensified security efforts at Makpandu refugee camp in Yambio following a deadly attack that claimed the life of a Sudanese refugee.

The patrol, conducted in collaboration with local authorities and security forces, was aimed at assessing the security situation and strengthening measures to protect civilians and prevent further violence in the area.

Makpandu camp hosts thousands of refugees who fled conflict in neighbouring Sudan, seeking safety in South Sudan. However, rising insecurity has renewed fears among displaced families.

Residents reported frequent incursions by armed individuals who allegedly enter the camp, fire weapons, intimidate occupants, and loot or destroy property.

One refugee, Bekia Mahadi, who fled with her eight children, said the persistent violence has created an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty within the camp.

According to testimonies from several families, the attacks have forced some residents to abandon their shelters at night and seek refuge in nearby bush areas for safety.

UNMISS said its engagement includes regular patrols and coordination with community leaders and security agencies to improve protection and restore confidence among refugees.

The mission emphasised that sustained collaboration and increased presence on the ground remain critical to safeguarding vulnerable populations who have already been displaced by conflict.
