By Joe Udo

JOS (CONVERSEER) – The management of the University of Jos (UNIJOS) has confirmed the murder of a 300-level student, Peter Mafuyai, by his friend and fellow student.

Dr Rejoice Songden, Registrar of the institution, disclosed this in a condolence statement issued on Monday in Jos.

According to her, the deceased, Mafuyai, was a 300-level student of the Department of Banking and Finance, while the alleged killer, identified as Nanpon Timnan, is a 200-level student of the Department of Agricultural Science.

Dr Songden described the incident as “unfortunate and deeply saddening,” adding that the university community was mourning the tragic loss.

“The Management of the University of Jos has received with deep sadness the report of the unfortunate incident involving two students, which tragically resulted in the death of a 300-level student of the Department of Banking and Finance,” the statement read.

“On behalf of the council, management, staff and students, we express our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased and pray for God’s comfort and strength to bear the painful loss.”

“The management wishes to clarify that the incident occurred off campus, not within the university premises as erroneously reported by some media outlets,” she said.

Dr Songden further explained that the university had concluded its 2024/2025 academic session on August 30, noting that students were not in session at the time of the incident.

“Students are expected back on campus for the 2025/2026 academic session on November 10,” she stated, adding that the university has strengthened security measures to ensure the safety of lives and property within its environment.

She assured that the institution is cooperating fully with security agencies to ensure a thorough investigation and that justice is served.
