Vice President J.D. Vance’s weekend ski trip in Vermont took an unexpected turn when he narrowly avoided a collision on the slopes and was confronted with a political remark.
Vance visited Sugarbush Resort in Warren, Vermont, for a break from Washington, D.C., hitting the mountain on Saturday, February 1, for a skiing session.
Eyewitnesses identified him on the slopes, and video footage obtained by TMZ shows a skier believed to be Vance making his way down the mountain at a steady pace. His technique appeared smooth as he navigated the snow—until a near mishap occurred.
One skier was taken out by another and nearly crashed into Vance. The skier managed to stop just in time, but the close call was likely more than the Secret Service would have preferred.
While on his way to the ski lift, Vance was also met with a critical remark. Someone on the mountain asked him how it felt to be “Putin’s puppet,” referencing his stance on Ukraine. Vance did not respond to the comment beyond a simple greeting and continued on his way.
The remark comes amid heightened scrutiny following Vance’s tense exchange with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office on Friday, February 28.
During the meeting, Vance said Zelensky should thank former President Donald Trump for seeking a diplomatic resolution to the war in Ukraine. He also accused Zelensky of being “disrespectful” by raising concerns about the war directly in front of the American people.
The interaction drew mixed reactions, with some criticizing the conduct of Trump, Vance, and Zelensky during the meeting. In Vermont, where opposition to Vance was evident, protesters greeted his arrival with signs, some calling him a traitor and others making mocking comparisons.
Vermont has traditionally leaned Democratic, with Kamala Harris securing nearly twice as many votes as Trump in the state during the last election. Though Vance was on vacation, it remains uncertain how much relaxation he managed to find.
