A Chinese robotic company recently announced it has created a robotic dog that is capable of running 100 meters in under 10 seconds.

A video shared on X, formerly Twitter, by Collin Rugg, co-owner of Trending Politics, shows the new robotic dog in action and explains how the Chinese robotic company used new technology to overcome the challenges of increasing the robot’s speed and performance.

“The Black Panther 2.0 built by Mirror Me has fitted a robot dog with spring joints so it can replicate live animals,” Rugg tweeted. “The robot can run faster than most humans and was created in just three months.”

According to Interesting Engineering, the Black Panther 2.0 robot was created as part of a partnership between Mirror Me, a Chinese robotic company, and Zhejiang University’s humanoid innovation institute.

Highlighting the success of the Black Panther 2.0 robot in such a short period of time, Wang Hongtao, a professor at Zhejiang University, said, “Through the integration of software and components, we created a prototype within a mere three months.”

Xinhua, a Chinese news agency, reported that the Black Panther 2.0 robotic dog weighs 83 pounds and is just over 2 feet tall.

According to the video shared on social media, the creation of the Black Panther 2.0 was not just about “breaking records” but about “redefining what’s possible.” To achieve the amount of energy needed for the robot to spring 100 meters in under 10 seconds, the Chinese robotic company used technology that allows the robotic legs to transfer energy between them to “act as a unified force.”

The video also shows how the creators of the new robot designed its features based on inspiration from animals in nature, such as black panthers, kangaroo rats, and other animals.

Xinhua reported that while the new robotic dog is still not as fast as wildebeests, ostriches, and cheetahs, the Black Panther 2.0 is capable of sprinting faster than most humans. Researchers hope to eventually be able to design a robot capable of outperforming any animal, according to the outlet.
