Canada secured a dramatic place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after Stephen Eustaquio scored a stoppage-time winner to seal a hard-fought 1-0 victory over South Africa, ending the African side’s impressive campaign.

The Round of 32 encounter, played on Sunday, had all the ingredients of an exciting knockout contest but produced few clear-cut opportunities for much of the match as both teams struggled to convert possession into meaningful chances.

Despite the high stakes, the game was characterised by poor finishing and cautious attacking play, with neither side able to break the deadlock during regulation time.

While the intensity never dropped, quality in the final third was lacking as both teams repeatedly squandered promising opportunities.

South Africa, who had impressed in reaching the knockout stage, defended resolutely and frustrated the Canadians for long periods.

Bafana Bafana also believed they should have been awarded a penalty following a challenge inside the area, but the referee waved away their appeals, leaving the scores level.

As the contest entered its closing stages, both teams appeared to be preparing for extra time after the fourth official signalled five minutes of added time.

South Africa seemed content to see out the remaining minutes, but a momentary lapse in concentration proved costly.

Canada seized the opportunity in the 92nd minute when the ball fell invitingly to midfielder Stephen Eustaquio on the edge of the penalty area.

Without hesitation, he struck a powerful low drive into the bottom-left corner, leaving the South African goalkeeper with no chance and sending the Canadian players and fans into wild celebrations.

The goal settled a contest that had gradually become more open as fatigue created spaces in both defences.

South Africa increased the tempo in search of a breakthrough, but Canada ultimately made the decisive moment count.

The victory keeps alive Canada’s dream of making a deep run on home soil as one of the tournament’s co-hosts.

The North Americans will now face either the Netherlands or Morocco in the Round of 16, with the two nations scheduled to meet in their Round of 32 clash.
