Dr. Mohamed Janabi, WHO Regional Director for Africa, has reiterated that tuberculosis (TB) eradication in Africa is achievable.
But he stressed that progress depends on strong national leadership, sustained investment, and empowered communities spearheading change at all levels. The Africa regional director said during the WHO World Tuberculosis Day commemoration in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State capital.
Represented by Dr. Kolude Olufumilola, WHO Zonal Coordinator South South, Dr. Janabi highlighted that between 2015 and 2024, TB deaths decreased by 46% and cases dropped by 28%.
Despite this progress, TB claimed 378,000 lives and infected over 2.7 million people in 2024 alone, with around 600,000 cases in Africa remaining undiagnosed or untreated.
In 2023, the United Nations High-Level Meeting on TB set a target to reduce TB deaths by 90% come 2027, emphasizing the necessity for sustained political will and increased domestic financing. Dr. Janabi also underscored the importance of governments accelerating the implementation of national TB strategies and boosting domestic investment.
On his part, the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ekem John expressed gratitude to WHO officials and TB partners for their efforts in TB management while Dr. Nsisong Asanga, State TB Program Manager, commended the Commissioner’s dedication to TB control.
A sensitization program on TB symptoms, prevention, testing, and treatment was conducted, featuring drama and free testing for TB and lung x-rays using a portable digital x-ray machine.
