WISCONSIN – Steven Merkel, 52, remains in custody after being charged with reckless homicide and gun-related offences following the tragic shooting death of his 8-year-old stepson, Michael Meagher, inside his Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, home.

According to police, the incident occurred around 2:25 a.m. on Monday when Merkel reportedly showed the boy his firearms. One of the guns discharged, fatally striking Michael.

Officers arrived to find the boy with a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Merkel faces charges of felony reckless homicide and unlawful use of a dangerous weapon. His bond has been set at $250,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.

Michael, described as a “bright, funny boy” who loved playing with friends and had two older sisters, attended Brook Park Elementary School in La Grange, Illinois.

The Brookfield-La Grange School District 95 released a statement praising Michael’s “incredible kindness” and noting that he was “beloved by all.”

A family friend has launched a fundraiser to cover funeral costs and other expenses, which has nearly reached its $22,000 goal.

The fundraiser describes the profound grief felt by Michael’s family, friends, and school community, stating, “We all continue to grieve at this time and appreciate your support.”

The tragic incident underscores concerns about firearm safety and proper gun storage, especially in homes with children.
