World Cup: ‘Not even a VAR check with Messi’ – South Africa boss Hugo Broos slams officiating

South Africa’s coach, Hugo Broos, has referenced Argentine legend Lionel Messi to illustrate his belief that the FIFA World Cup has been unjust towards his players.

South African star Themba Zwane received a three-match suspension following a red card in their opening match against Mexico.

Broos addressed the media prior to his team’s second group match at the FIFA World Cup against Czechia.

He said that he views the red card given to Zwane as excessive, especially considering that Argentina’s captain committed a hazardous foul that was not even subjected to VAR review.

“I believe the red card is too harsh. I do not consider it a red card when I reflect on what occurred yesterday with [Lionel] Messi. I certainly disagree with that. There was not even a VAR check for Messi,” he stated.

The experienced midfielder Zwane was brought on as a substitute for South Africa against Mexico but was dismissed in the 84th minute.

The 36-year-old seemingly struck Mexican player Roberto Alvarado in the face while being obstructed, prompting VAR to suggest that violent conduct had been detected.

Zwane now risks missing the rest of the tournament, as FIFA has imposed an additional two-game suspension on top of the mandatory one-game ban for a red card due to violent conduct.

Bafana Bafana could welcome him back if they progress beyond the group stage and into the Round of 32.

Lionel Messi avoided a red card during the Argentina-Algeria match after a clash with Aissa Mandi.

The 38-year-old appeared to make contact with the calf of the Algerian defender while contesting the ball but was not penalized, raising concerns about the officiating.
