WORLD CUP: Sadiq Umar, says he may retire from Super Eagles soon

Super Eagles striker Sadiq Umar has lamented Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup, revealing that he may soon retire from the country’s national team squad.

The Valencia forward said he has not made a final decision but plans to evaluate his future when the new club season begins.

Speaking to Radio France Internationale Hausa, the 29-year-old explained that the choice would be guided by what is best for his career and long-term fitness.

“I am contemplating retirement from the Nigerian national team, but I will make a final decision when the new season begins,” Umar said.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s World Cup disappointment, the striker admitted the setback was painful but insisted it was time to look ahead.

“I cannot specifically identify the reason for our failure, but that is now in the past. We must focus on the next World Cup, which is four years away.”

Umar also addressed questions surrounding his recent absence from the national team, dismissing suggestions of any fallout with the coaching staff.

“Perhaps my profile does not fit what they need at the moment. There are other players performing well because Nigeria is blessed with enormous talent,” he explained.

The former Almeria striker stressed that his age is not the main issue, but rather the need to carefully manage the next stage of his career.

“I want to think carefully about what will help me focus on my career and stay in football for a long time, like Cristiano Ronaldo.”

His comments are expected to spark fresh debate about the future of the Super Eagles as the team looks to rebuild after another painful World Cup qualifying campaign.
