From Felix Ikem, Nsukka

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has maintained its position among Nigeria’s leading universities in global assessments, emerging third in Nigeria in the latest Webometrics Ranking of World Universities.

The Webometrics ranking, released in July 2026, assessed over 32,000 higher education institutions globally. It placed UNN behind the University of Ibadan and the University of Lagos among Nigerian universities.

The latest result adds to a series of strong performances by the University of Nigeria in major international ranking exercises, consolidating its growing profile in research, teaching, academic visibility and global competitiveness.

Earlier this year, UNN was ranked the second-best university in Nigeria in the 2026 AD Scientific Index. The ranking assessed universities primarily on research productivity and impact, using indicators including researchers’H-index, i10-index and citation records.

The University also featured in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026, where it was placed among the best 1500 Universities globally and among the best in Nigeria.

In the ranking, UNN recorded particularly strong performances in many subject areas, including law, arts and humanities, medical and Health sciences , education and psychology.

The University was also rated among the best 20 universities in Africa in the inaugural 2026 QS World University ranking,

Similarly in the 2026 SCImago, UNN was ranked third in Nigeria, recognizing its contributions in research, Innovation and societal Impact.

The consistency of the University in these rankings provides further evidence of the University’s sustained academic and research presence on the global stage, even as it continues to pursue improvements in infrastructure, digital visibility, research capacity and international partnerships.

The Webometrics ranking is particularly significant because it measures aspects of a university’s presence and visibility on the global web, including the accessibility and dissemination of academic knowledge and research outputs.

The latest ranking comes at a time when the University is intensifying efforts to strengthen its research ecosystem and digital infrastructure under the administration of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Simon Ortuanya.

The Vice-Chancellor has repeatedly expressed the administration’s ambition to move UNN towards the forefront of African higher education. Following the University’s strong showing in the 2026 AD Scientific Index, he said the institution would not rest on its achievements until it attained the position of the best university in Africa.

Many staff of the University believe that the latest Webometrics position, which came on the heels of strong showings in the AD Scientific Index and Times Higher Education rankings, QS World University ranking and the Scimago, points to a university increasingly positioning itself for greater visibility and competitiveness in the global higher education community.
